While modelling has revolutionised our understanding of the physical world, a far greater challenge remains: modelling human behaviour. Machines obey physical laws. Bridges respond predictably to loads. Electrical circuits follow mathematical principles. Human beings, however, are far less predictable.

People are influenced by emotions, values, loyalties, beliefs, ambitions and social pressures. These factors are difficult to measure and even harder to quantify. Yet some of the most important decisions in society depend on understanding them. The question is not whether these factors influence outcomes. The question is whether they can be modelled at all.

The limits of traditional measurement

In engineering, variables can usually be measured directly. Length, mass, temperature and force all have standard units.

Social factors are different. How do we measure loyalty? How do we quantify trust? How should we calculate dedication, political alignment or organisational culture? Because these variables are difficult to express numerically, they are often treated as subjective and therefore unsuitable for formal modelling.

However, this may be an unnecessary limitation. The inability to measure something perfectly does not mean it cannot be modelled meaningfully. Meteorologists cannot predict the exact movement of every air molecule, yet weather forecasting remains valuable. Economists cannot predict every individual decision, yet economic models still provide useful guidance.

The same principle may apply to social systems.

Every manager already uses models

Project managers, executives and political leaders make decisions every day based on implicit models of human behaviour. A manager may anticipate resistance to organisational change. A political strategist may predict voter reactions. A project leader may estimate team morale.

Although these assessments are often described as intuition, they are usually based on mental models developed through experience. The problem is not that these models do not exist. The problem is that they are often invisible, unstructured and difficult to evaluate.

Formalising these models could improve consistency, transparency and decision-making.

The rise of social modelling

Recent advances in data science, behavioural economics and artificial intelligence have begun to bridge the gap between physical and social modelling. Researchers now use sophisticated techniques to analyse consumer behaviour, social networks, political movements and organisational dynamics.

While these models remain imperfect, they demonstrate that complex human systems are not entirely beyond analysis. Patterns emerge. Relationships can be identified. Probabilities can be estimated.

This does not mean human beings become predictable machines. Rather, it suggests that collective behaviour often contains structures that can be studied and understood. The challenge is recognising both the power and the limitations of these models.

A changing world demands better models

Many of today’s global challenges highlight the importance of understanding social systems. Political polarisation, economic inequality, misinformation, organisational dysfunction and social unrest often emerge from interactions between millions of individual decisions.

Traditional approaches frequently focus on isolated events rather than underlying systems. Yet systems thinking suggests that visible outcomes are often symptoms of deeper structures. To solve complex problems, we may need better models of the forces that shape human behaviour.

Just as engineers look beyond the physical appearance of a bridge to understand the invisible stresses within it, social scientists may need to look beyond surface events to identify the hidden dynamics driving societies.

The next frontier of understanding

Human progress has historically been driven by our ability to model the physical world with increasing precision. Today, many of the greatest challenges facing humanity involve social, organisational and behavioural systems rather than purely technical problems.

If the future requires more effective governance, stronger institutions, healthier organisations and more resilient societies, then our ability to model these complex systems may become increasingly important.

We may never achieve complete models of human behaviour. People are simply too complex. However, perfection is not the objective. The objective is to understand more than we understand today. In that sense, modelling remains one of humanity’s most powerful tools. The invisible models we construct shape not only how we interpret the world, but also how we change it.
