World Refrigeration Day has unveiled ‘Cool Intelligence’ as its global theme for 2026, as preparations get underway for the annual event on 26 June. The theme underscores the critical role of cooling and sustainable heating in areas such as food preservation, healthcare, medicine storage, digital infrastructure and overall human comfort.

Organisers say ‘Cool Intelligence’ reflects a holistic approach to the design, installation, operation and maintenance of cooling and heating systems. It brings together both technological innovation and human expertise, encompassing system selection, correct installation practices, energy efficiency, and responsiveness to local climate conditions, energy availability and user needs.

The theme also acknowledges the growing influence of digital tools and artificial intelligence in system control, monitoring and optimisation. However, these technologies are positioned as enablers that enhance the capabilities of skilled professionals, rather than replace them.

With global demand for cooling and sustainable heating continuing to rise across urban environments, industry and communities, the initiative places emphasis on efficient, reliable and resilient systems. It also highlights the importance of minimising environmental impact while expanding access in a responsible and sustainable manner.

World Refrigeration Day notes that ‘Cool Intelligence’ is already evident in a wide range of applications worldwide, including cold chains for food, healthcare systems for medicines and vaccines, energy-efficient buildings and cities, data centre infrastructure, and heat pump technologies for low-carbon heating. Additional resources and participation guidelines are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
