The SAIRAC Johannesburg Centre used its 62nd Annual General Meeting and Christmas in July function on 24 July 2026 to do more than review a successful year – it also shone a spotlight on individuals whose commitment has significantly advanced the HVAC&R industry and the Centre itself.

A major highlight of the evening was the presentation of the SAIRAC Silver Awards (previously known as the SAIRAC Meritorious Awards). These prestigious honours were awarded to four industry professionals for their exceptional service in developing and implementing the national integrated occupational assessment for refrigeration mechanics. This project, which has been two years in the making, required sustained commitment, multiple meetings each month, and no formal financial compensation.
The 2026 SAIRAC Silver Award recipients were:
- Craig Hendricks
- Grant Laidlaw – receiving the Silver Award for the second time, having first been honoured in 2021
- James Laidlaw
- Johan Venter
Their collective work underpins a more robust and standardised assessment framework for refrigeration mechanics, directly supporting skills development, professional standards, and long‑term industry quality. By strengthening the way competencies are evaluated and recognised, the team has contributed to a more sustainable and professional future for the refrigeration sector.
Recognition also extended to those whose contributions are felt strongly at Centre level. The Most Diligent Centre Member award was presented to Sello Moseki, acknowledging his exceptional attendance and support across technical talks, courses, and Centre functions. His consistent presence reflects the kind of day‑to‑day commitment that keeps the Johannesburg Centre vibrant and engaged.
The Best Technical Talk Presenter of the Year award went to Robert Fox, following a year in which he played a central role in the Centre’s educational programme. Fox presented multiple courses and talks, including equipment selection for refrigeration applications, ducting, refrigeration applications, and several CPD‑bearing technical sessions. The award recognises both the quality and impact of his presentations, which have been well attended and highly valued by members.
Rounding out the accolades, the Best Learner Award was presented to Leonard Moolman, recognised as the leading learner/apprentice in air conditioning, refrigeration, or related courses. Nominated by SAIRAC course lecturers and endorsed by the Johannesburg Centre Committee, Moolman’s award highlights the importance SAIRAC places on developing the next generation of HVAC&R professionals.
Collectively, these awards underscore SAIRAC Johannesburg Centre’s ongoing commitment to excellence, education, and professional recognition across all levels of the industry.
