Speaking at the launch of CEISLAB SA, Venter focused on the importance of maintaining high-quality standards and effective certification to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
He reflected on the challenges faced by the industry, notably the economic slowdown and heightened competition. “For many years, we’ve been grappling with economic stagnation, limited market demand and a highly competitive market, which has often led to a situation of oversupply. This, coupled with the rising costs of polymer, has created a tough environment for the industry’s long-term future,” Venter remarked.
He also highlighted the need for an independent certification authority to ensure product quality, explaining how the industry had struggled for many years with ineffective product certification. “There was only one certification authority, the SABS, and they didn’t always meet our expectations. We fought hard to get them to do what was necessary to uphold industry standards, but it wasn’t always successful,” he added.
Venter then shared how the formation of SAPPMA in 2004 was a turning point in addressing these issues. SAPPMA aimed to promote quality, educate consumers and build consumer confidence in the industry. Despite challenges, including an investigation under the Competition Act, SAPPMA has remained focused on its mission. “We are determined to maintain the quality of the pipes in South Africa, which is essential for the country’s infrastructure,” Venter said.
He emphasised that quality certification and factory audits play a crucial role in upholding standards. “We’ve had a strict code of conduct for our members, and factory audits have been conducted since 2007 to ensure compliance with industry standards,” he noted. Furthermore, SAPPMA has been instrumental in creating public awareness through media campaigns and seminars aimed at both industry professionals and the public. “It’s crucial for consumers and industry players to understand the importance of quality and adhere to the highest standards,” Venter stressed.
Venter called for more marketing support to strengthen the demand for high-quality products. “We need to intensify our marketing efforts to promote the value of high-quality pipes and ensure that the consumer pull effect grows,” he stated.
