Elmecair and LG donate air conditioning systems to Sandton SPCA
Two new air conditioners at the Sandton SPCA were supplied and installed at no cost to the organisation, thanks to a joint contribution by Elmecair and LG.
The project was facilitated by Nigel Pengelly of VMG Consultants, who worked closely with both companies to help bring the initiative to fruition.
For most visitors, the air-conditioning units are just unobtrusive white boxes on the wall. For anyone in HVAC or facilities management, however, they are a textbook example of how targeted climate control in small, critical zones can transform an under-resourced site into a facility capable of delivering near-clinical standards of care.
According to Sandton SPCA committee member Florence Thom, the impact of the donation extends far beyond comfort.
“These installations have fundamentally improved our ability to care for vulnerable animals, particularly those requiring specialised treatment and recovery. We are deeply grateful to Nigel Pengelly of VMG Consultants, Elmecair and LG for making these life-changing and, in many cases, life-saving improvements possible.”
For a sector where every rand must be justified, this type of targeted, high-impact intervention demonstrates how engineering expertise, industry partnerships and community commitment can combine to deliver meaningful and lasting change.
Sandton SPCA general manager Nick Smith explains that SPCAs operate on a typical non-profit footprint: repurposed rooms, containers converted for new uses, and a constant need to stretch limited capital. There is no government operational funding. As a result, the site has grown organically, with infrastructure added as funds and donations become available. Against that backdrop, the introduction of correctly placed, professionally installed split units has done three things at once: stabilised temperatures where they matter most, reduced reliance on crude workarounds, and made it possible to implement proper infection-control protocols.
The main clinic illustrates the point.
“Functionally, it operates as a primary-care veterinary facility for low-income communities such as Alexandra and Bertrams. It handles basic procedures, dentistry, wound care and follow-up treatments. Before air conditioning, the internal environment simply tracked Johannesburg’s extremes: winter mornings cold enough to delay recovery from anaesthesia, summer heat that stressed already compromised animals and staff alike,” says Smith.
With the LG equipment in place, the clinic now runs at a controlled, moderate setpoint, allowing staff to treat temperature as a known variable rather than an external risk factor. From an engineering perspective, this is a classic comfort-plus-process application: the same split units that keep staff functional are also providing a more predictable thermal envelope for anaesthetised animals whose thermoregulation is impaired.
The infection-control strategy depends heavily on this stability. The SPCA uses F10, a veterinary disinfectant that is effective yet low in volatile fumes, in place of harsher chlorine-based products in the clinic and high-care areas. That choice only pays off fully in a space where temperature and ventilation can be managed. Air conditioning limits condensation, avoids the swings that encourage mould and pathogen survival, and helps keep the indoor air quality within a narrow, repeatable band, explains Smith.
The most technically interesting installation is the Parvo unit, housed in a converted steel shipping container. From a thermal standpoint, a container is a worst-case envelope: thin metal walls, minimal inherent insulation, and high surface exposure. In full sun it behaves like a heat sink; in winter it sheds heat as fast as it gains it. Before conversion, this particular unit was used for storage.
When the SPCA decided to turn it into an isolation ward for highly infectious Parvo cases, the HVAC requirement was key: without active climate control, the project was a non-starter.
Elmecair and LG supplied and installed a wall-mounted split system sized to cope with the container’s small volume but extreme thermal load. The unit had to be capable of rapid pull-down in summer, steady maintenance in winter, and reliable operation despite frequent door openings as staff move animals and equipment. The fact that it was a donation did not change the performance requirement; if anything, it raised the bar, because ongoing operating and repair costs would fall on the SPCA.
Smith says that inside, the Parvo unit functions as a small, high-care isolation ward. Staff wear full PPE, and anyone assigned there on a given day does not work elsewhere on the property to avoid cross-contamination.
“Puppies are brought in, assessed and either humanely euthanised if too far gone or enrolled in a multi-visit treatment protocol. We achieve 80–90% survival rate for treatable Parvo cases, a figure that depends as much on environmental control as it does on drugs and nursing. The container’s air conditioning is doing double duty: delivering comfort cooling and heating while also supporting a strict separation of air and surfaces from the rest of the facility.”
A new high-care room for kittens and young puppies provides a second case study.
“Initially, this was a basic room with a cold tap and hosepipe, and no internal temperature control. Bowls and litter trays had to be carried out and washed elsewhere, increasing risk of disease spread. Young animals – particularly neonates – are notoriously poor at maintaining body temperature, so a cold snap or heat wave could undo days of progress.”
With the installation of a new Elmecair–LG split unit and upgraded plumbing (including a proper hot-and-cold sink), the room now functions as a self-contained micro-ward. All feeding and litter equipment is washed and disinfected on-site, and the room is routinely held at roughly 23°C during cold periods, an ideal compromise between energy consumption and clinical need. From a facilities standpoint, this is classic zoned environmental control: a small, well-defined area running at a tighter spec than the rest of the site, enabled by dedicated HVAC and localised services.
Elsewhere, in the general kennel blocks, the SPCA relies on more basic thermal interventions – heat lamps in the enclosed rear sections of kennels and the rollout of raised beds with blankets to reduce conductive heat loss to concrete floors. These solutions, while low-tech, are integrated into the same overall philosophy: apply the most sophisticated control where the clinical risk is highest, and simpler measures where volume and openness make precision HVAC impractical.
“By supplying and installing these systems, Elmecair and LG have effectively given this SPCA the ability to treat environment as a controllable parameter, alongside drugs, staffing and protocols. In doing so, they have moved the facility closer to hospital-grade operation in its most sensitive areas, without imposing unsustainable capital costs.” For a sector where every rand must be justified, that is exactly the kind of targeted, high-leverage intervention that makes engineering matter.
Reflecting on the project, Thom says the Sandton SPCA remains profoundly appreciative of the support received.
