Climate control is not normally the first thing people associate with animal welfare. Yet in veterinary clinics, shelters and rescue facilities, environmental management can play a major role in animal health and recovery.

As South African SPCAs and rescue organisations modernise their facilities, many are beginning to recognise that heating, cooling and ventilation systems are not luxuries – they are operational necessities.

Recent HVAC&R donations to the Sandton SPCA highlighted how environmental control directly supports animal welfare, particularly in high-care and isolation environments.

Young animals are especially vulnerable to temperature fluctuations. Newborn kittens and puppies have limited ability to regulate body temperature and can deteriorate rapidly if exposed to excessive cold or heat. Similarly, animals recovering from illness, surgery or infectious disease require stable environmental conditions to reduce stress and support recovery.

In shelters, the challenge is compounded by South Africa’s climate extremes. Winter cold fronts, summer heatwaves and poorly insulated structures can create difficult conditions inside kennels and treatment areas.

Many older facilities were never originally designed with modern environmental management in mind. Shipping containers converted into treatment wards, temporary structures and overcrowded kennel environments often become extremely hot in summer and uncomfortably cold during winter nights.

HVAC&R systems therefore provide more than comfort alone. They contribute to temperature stability, improved air circulation and healthier indoor environments for both animals and staff.

In infectious-disease isolation units, environmental control also assists with operational management. Stable indoor conditions allow staff to maintain safer treatment spaces while reducing additional stress on already vulnerable animals.

Beyond direct medical benefits, environmental management can also help reduce behavioural stress in shelter environments.

Animal welfare experts increasingly recognise the impact that temperature, ventilation and noise levels have on animal behaviour. Poor conditions can contribute to kennel stress, anxiety and weakened immune responses. Combined with exercise programmes, improved bedding and social interaction, better environmental conditions help create calmer and healthier shelter environments overall.

Energy efficiency is another growing consideration. Welfare organisations operate under significant budget pressure, making operating costs an important factor when selecting climate-control systems. Modern inverter technologies and energy-efficient HVAC&R solutions can help reduce electricity consumption while maintaining more stable temperatures.

This creates opportunities for the HVAC&R sector to contribute both commercially and socially. Companies involved in shelter projects often find that their expertise addresses real operational challenges while demonstrating the broader societal value of environmental control technologies.

Importantly, the conversation is shifting beyond commercial buildings and retail spaces. Climate control is increasingly recognised as part of healthcare infrastructure – including veterinary and animal-care environments.

For the HVAC&R industry, this opens a broader discussion around how environmental technologies can contribute to community welfare, public health and sustainable facility management. As shelters and rescue organisations continue upgrading facilities, climate control is likely to become an increasingly important component of animal welfare infrastructure across South Africa.
