Every year on 26 June, the global refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump community comes together to celebrate World Refrigeration Day (WRD) – a day dedicated to recognising the essential role that cooling technologies play in protecting lives, preserving food, supporting healthcare, enabling industry, and improving comfort across the world.

For 2026, the World Refrigeration Day Secretariat has announced the theme ‘Cool Intelligence’, a fitting tribute to the expertise, judgement and practical knowledge that underpin one of the world’s most important industries.
In an era where artificial intelligence dominates headlines, this year’s message reminds us that another form of intelligence has quietly sustained modern civilisation for decades. Cooling and sustainable heating systems are often unseen, yet their impact reaches every corner of society. From hospitals safeguarding life-saving medicines and vaccines to supermarkets reducing food waste, data centres powering the digital economy, and climate control creating productive workplaces, refrigeration and air conditioning remain fundamental to daily life.
But behind every successful installation is something that cannot simply be programmed.
Intelligence that cannot be automated
The World Refrigeration Day theme highlights that Cool Intelligence is not simply about sophisticated controls or smart technology.
It is about people.
It is the engineer selecting the most appropriate system for the application rather than simply the cheapest option. It is the technician whose workmanship ensures efficiency, reliability and safety for years to come. It is the consultant balancing energy consumption, environmental responsibility and client expectations.
These are decisions built on experience, technical knowledge and continual learning. While digital tools, building management systems, remote monitoring and artificial intelligence are transforming the way HVAC&R systems are managed, they remain exactly that – tools. Technology enhances professional expertise; it does not replace it.
As the WRD Secretariat aptly states: “The smartest system in the world still needs skilled people.”
Building knowledge together
The South African HVAC&R industry has always been built on collaboration. Training institutions, manufacturers, contractors, consulting engineers, suppliers and industry bodies continue to share knowledge that raises standards across the profession. Every apprentice mentored, every technical article published, every CPD presentation delivered and every discussion between experienced professionals helps strengthen the industry’s collective intelligence.
Knowledge shared becomes knowledge multiplied. As the industry embraces lower-GWP refrigerants, improved energy efficiency, digital controls and sustainable heating technologies, continuous professional development has never been more important.
Cool Intelligence is therefore not only about innovation – it is about ensuring that innovation is correctly applied.
Looking ahead
As environmental challenges, urbanisation and increasing cooling demand continue to shape the future, HVAC&R professionals will remain at the forefront of delivering practical solutions that improve lives while reducing environmental impact.
The future will require more than smart equipment.
It will require smart people.
People who understand systems, think critically, solve problems and continue learning throughout their careers.
That is the true meaning of Cool Intelligence.
