Air conditioning has quietly become one of the most significant drivers of electricity consumption worldwide. During the Blue Frontier webinar on the ASHRAE platform, speakers highlighted data showing that HVAC systems already account for 40–60% of energy use in commercial buildings, with demand projected to rise sharply as global temperatures increase.

The International Energy Agency has identified cooling as the fastest-growing end use of electricity in commercial buildings through 2035. While data centres often dominate headlines, the webinar revealed that cooling demand far exceeds data centre energy use – and that roughly half of data centre electricity consumption is itself devoted to cooling.

The challenge for utilities is not just total energy consumption, but peak demand. On hot days, air conditioners across homes, offices and industrial facilities activate simultaneously, creating short but intense demand spikes. Utilities must invest billions in generation capacity, transmission lines and substations to serve these peaks, even though they may occur for only a few hours per year.

Renewable energy complicates the picture. Solar power is now one of the cheapest and fastest ways to add generation capacity, but its production profile often fails to align with peak cooling demand. Utilities typically rely on lithium-ion batteries to bridge this gap – an expensive solution with finite lifespans and operational limitations.

Blue Frontier’s technology reframes HVAC as part of the solution rather than the problem. By embedding energy storage directly into the cooling process, HVAC systems can shift when they consume electricity, reducing peak demand without compromising comfort.

The webinar made clear that addressing climate change and grid reliability will require more than cleaner power generation. It will require smarter, more flexible HVAC systems that align cooling demand with available energy – an area where next-generation HVAC technologies can play a pivotal role.
