The GIZ programme, Proklima, has been contributing to the success of the Montreal Protocol by promoting Green Cooling worldwide: the combination of natural refrigerants and energy efficiency.
The celebrations of the World Ozone Day in Kenya were held in the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology. Eng Festus Ng’eno, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, was also present at these celebrations. Since 2010, PROKLIMA in Kenya, in collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, has trained around 1 000 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) technicians on the safe handling of hydrocarbon refrigerants, and supported eleven technical training institutions in educating their trainers.
This as well as the phase out of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and many more achievements were celebrated on 16 September by Kenya and the international community to ensure the protection of our environment as well as of our health and well-being.
Like many countries around the world, Cameroon celebrated the 36th International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 19 September 2023. The event was held in Douala, in the André Siaka conference room of the Groupement Inter-Patronal du Cameroun (GICAM). It was attended by Minepded, the Governor of the Littoral Region, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ONACC, the Prefect of the Wouri Department, the Mayor of Douala, the Resident Representative of UNIDO in Cameroon, the Resident Representative of GIZ in Cameroon, the President of the Association de Froid et Climatisation, civil society and a large audience.
The Minister for the Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development of the Republic of Cameroon, Pierre Hélé, welcomes the new co-operation with GIZ and the European Union on the ‘Climate and Ozone Friendly Cooling in West and Central Africa’ project (ROCA).
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change celebrated the 29th World Ozone Day on the sixteenth of September. Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Leena Nandan, Head of UNEP India office Atul Bagai, and Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP India office Isabelle Tschan were part of the celebrations.
The celebration of World Ozone Day in Senegal took place on 14 September 2023 at the Mbour fishing quay.
The ceremony began with the arrival of Baba Dramé, Director of the Environment and Classified Establishments, who visited the stands of the various participants, including the GIZ stand with the ROCA project ‘Refroidissement respectueux de l’Ozone et du Climat en Afrique de l’Ouest et Centrale (ROCA)’ (ozone and climate-friendly refrigeration in West and Central Africa).
This was followed by speeches from various players in the sector, including: the representative of the refrigeration specialists from the Mbour fishing wharf, Abdoulaye Gaye, National Co-ordinator of the ROCA project, the Director of Cabinet for the Mayor of Mbour, Mandiaye Fall, and the Director of the Environment and Classified Establishments, Baba Dramé.
The ceremony was also marked by performances to raise awareness of the importance of the ozone layer, with the presentation of a sketch by the group ‘Yeewu Yeete’ and a choreography by women from the Mbour fishing quay.
The Agence pour l’Economie et la Maitrise de l’Energie (ANER), the Agence Sénégalaise d’Electrification Rurale (ASER) and the Réseau National des Femmes Frigoristes du Sénégal (RNAFF) were also present.
