While AI dominates the conversation, many challenges in data centres stem from broader trends in high-density computing.

Marc Matthews, director of engineering and head of PMO at Open Access Data Centres (OADC), spoke at the seminar AI Unlocked: What ‘AI-ready’ means for 2026 decisions. He emphasised that connectivity, modularity and sustainability will define Africa’s next phase of data centre growth.

Traditional racks operate at 3–10 kilowatts, but AI and other compute-intensive workloads are pushing densities toward 25 kilowatts, requiring advanced cooling solutions like direct-to-chip technology. According to Matthews, the distinction between AI and other high-performance computing is increasingly blurred: “Whether it’s AI or subsea connectivity infrastructure, the challenges are similar. They all require large amounts of power and generate significant heat.”

Sustainability is another critical consideration. Beyond renewable energy, operational efficiency can significantly reduce environmental impact. Optimising cooling systems and implementing closed-loop water systems allows facilities to conserve energy and water without major infrastructure changes. Matthews notes: “In many cases, sustainability improvements come from operational optimisation rather than entirely new technologies.”

OADC has also expanded into smaller, underserved regions, acquiring seven additional facilities to bring its total portfolio to 13 data centres. Cities such as East London and Port Elizabeth are emerging as potential future connectivity hubs, supported by submarine cable growth and government initiatives promoting digital infrastructure. Even modest one-megawatt sites represent strategic entry points for scalable expansion. Matthews concludes: “The key is building data centres that can evolve with the industry. Whether you call it AI, high-density computing, or something else entirely, flexibility will determine Africa’s advantage in the global digital economy.”
