As energy efficiency goals intersect with occupant health, ASHRAE’s Guideline 42: Enhanced Indoor Air Quality represents a major advancement – moving beyond the minimum requirements of Standard 62.1.
Beyond baseline ventilation
While Standard 62.1 establishes minimum ventilation rates, Guideline 42 provides best practices for achieving enhanced IAQ. Developed by engineers, industrial hygienists and IAQ scientists, it evaluates air quality along the entire airflow path – from outdoor intake to occupied space.
It recognises that IAQ is influenced not only by HVAC design, but also by:
- Building envelope integrity
- Filtration performance
- Pressurisation strategies
- Construction and maintenance practices

Lessons from the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the importance of ventilation, filtration and system verification. Guideline 42 integrates lessons such as:
- Verifying outdoor air delivery rates
- Monitoring damper function
- Maintaining demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) systems properly
It clarifies that CO₂ is a useful occupancy indicator – but not a direct measure of overall IAQ. Effective DCV systems integrate multiple inputs to optimise airflow and maintain healthy conditions.
Operational realities
Guideline 42 addresses challenges extending beyond design calculations:
- Humidity control: Prevents mould growth and material degradation, especially in humid climates.
- Low-occupancy operation: Maintains ventilation and pressurisation to prevent deterioration during reduced use.
- Filtration upgrades: Enhance protection against both chemical pollutants and infectious aerosols.
A living framework
Guideline 42 complements Standard 62.1 by translating IAQ science into actionable practice. It provides a flexible structure that can evolve with advances in filtration, sensors and control technologies.
For designers, facility managers and operators, it offers a roadmap toward healthier, more resilient buildings – where indoor air quality is not merely adequate, but optimised for both comfort and long-term health.
