Type 4: The real world – training through experience
Type 4 training takes place entirely in the workplace. It represents the transition from theory to reality – where project management, human relations, cost control and profitability collide.
Unlike classroom simulations, the workplace exposes learners to the constraints of commerce: time pressures, client expectations, budgets and politics. While authentic, this environment often limits exposure to a narrow product or service range, shaped by the company’s business model.
Still, there’s no substitute for this stage. It’s where competence becomes confidence and education becomes expertise.

The great divide: theorists vs artisans
The discussion around training often divides along two lines: the theorist and the artisan.
Type 1 training, though academically impressive, can be incomplete – covering advanced complexity at the expense of applied understanding. In contrast, artisan training is deeply practical, less complex and focused on technical execution.
Artisans are indispensable in the operational stage, delivering the finished product or service. Engineers and designers – products of Type 1 or 2 training – often excel in the development stage, designing systems that artisans later build or maintain.
From a market perspective, the demand for artisans – those who ‘make it work’ – often far exceeds that for design engineers. Yet, in terms of remuneration, scarcity plays a decisive role: the rarer the skill, the higher the value.
The incomplete puzzle of theoretical training
Can something incomplete – like pure theory – be effectively marketed as education?
Proponents of high-level theoretical training argue that students are expected to ‘fill in the gaps’ over time, gaining practical insight through experience. But this process can be slow and error-prone. Each mistake on the learning curve carries real-world consequences, sometimes costly or even dangerous.
This raises an important question: should education rely on time and exposure to complete the learner’s skill set?
The call for a balanced approach
Perhaps the answer lies not in choosing between theory and practice, but in balancing the two.
Education that combines academic depth with applied learning equips students to think critically while remaining grounded in real-world demands. Whether through dual apprenticeship models, university-industry partnerships or simulated training environments, the most effective systems ensure that theory and practice reinforce one another.
Ultimately, the goal of training should be both strategic and useful, developing thinkers who can do, and doers who can think.
