When Prospero Muheki’s name was called at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Great Hall, the applause was not just for his academic achievement – it was for the curiosity, discipline and vision that have defined his journey. This is part two of a two-part series.

One area where Muheki’s vision aligns closely with Schneider Electric’s is HVAC&R automation – the intelligent control of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. He explains: “Automation is essential in HVAC&R because it changes how energy, comfort and efficiency are managed. These systems often account for 40–60% of a building’s energy use, so optimising them has a massive impact on both sustainability and cost.”

He identifies three key advantages of automation: energy efficiency, cost reduction and data-driven insights. Smart thermostats and sensors continuously fine-tune performance; variable-speed drives cut unnecessary load; and predictive maintenance using AI extends equipment life and reduces downtime. “The data these systems generate allows facility managers to make informed decisions – to measure, plan and act,” he adds.

For Muheki, the role of engineers in this field is pivotal. “We are the ones designing intelligent systems that integrate automation and data-driven control. Through IoT sensors, advanced algorithms, and even machine learning, HVAC&R systems can adjust dynamically to real-time conditions – improving efficiency comfort and sustainability,” he says.

He’s also enthusiastic about integrating renewable energy into HVAC&R systems, for example solar-powered air conditioning. “Engineers help balance load and storage, ensuring reliability while reducing carbon emissions. Predictive maintenance powered by AI is another area I’m passionate about: detecting issues before they escalate saves both money and the environment.”

 

Automation for Africa

Can automation make HVAC&R more accessible and affordable in markets like South Africa? Muheki firmly believes so. “Automation reduces energy costs, improves resilience during load-shedding and allows scalable, modular solutions. Smart systems can integrate with solar and backup power, reducing non-critical loads during outages and keeping essential functions running,” he explains.

He’s also realistic about the challenges – upfront costs, connectivity and skills gaps – but remains optimistic. “As technology becomes more affordable and local expertise grows, automation will become a key enabler of accessible comfort and sustainability across Africa.”

When asked what excites him most about the future, Muheki’s enthusiasm shines through. “I’m fascinated by how AI and automation can make systems predictive rather than reactive. Imagine HVAC&R systems that pre-cool buildings before a heatwave or adjust to reduce load during peak tariffs. That’s the kind of smart efficiency that will define the next era.”

As part of his Schneider Electric award, Muheki will attend two advanced training courses at the Schneider Electric Training Academy in Midrand, a step closer to applying his passion in the real world. “Ultimately, I want to use data, automation and creativity to make energy efficiency both smart and accessible,” he says.

Muheki’s journey is what happens when curiosity meets purpose – and when opportunity meets determination. His story is not just about academic excellence, but about a vision for Africa’s engineers to lead in shaping a more connected, sustainable world.
