SAIRAC Technical Talk – Introduction to CoolProp and Python for the design engineer

For the upcoming online Technical Talk, SAIRAC Johannesburg is very happy to have Jannie Potgieter of Thermologika who will present this talk on 18 March 2021. The synopsis is an introduction to CoolProp and Python for the design engineer.

This introductory talk is specifically aimed at the design engineers and programming enthusiasts. Most engineers are accustomed to building large, complicated spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel in order to perform their design calculations.

One of the shortfalls of doing calculations in Excel is the lack of fluid properties. In this talk we will firstly look at how CoolProp addresses this shortfall. CoolProp not only provides us with accurate humid air and refrigerant properties, but also integrates easily with Excel.

In the second part of the talk, we will look at how we can further simplify our spreadsheets by using Python to perform the calculation intensive operations. This not only increases efficiency but also improves accuracy.

As part of the talk, we will also look at some real-world problems, highlighting the practical and computational advantage of using the Python environment. We will also take a look at what is required to get you started with using Python (Anaconda), as well as a quick look to some of the most important supporting packages and libraries, such as Numpy, Pandas, CoolProp and xlwings.

Although not a prerequisite, some basic programming experience will help attendees to get the most out of the talk. (If you can build a spreadsheet with equations, you already have some basic programming skills).

All software mentioned above is open source and completely free. Please note that Pre-registration is required. Registration is of course free as always.

Date & Time: 18 March 2021, 18h30.

Please register in advance for this Zoom Meeting.

Please note that your entry is muted (video & sound) for the sake of keeping the online traffic as low as possible. We will open this for discussion regarding the topic after the presentation. Please feel free to ask questions in the chat section during the presentation.

We will have a Q&A session at the end of the meeting and hopefully cover any related questions you might have.
