With projects such as a recently completed hydrogen production proof of concept (PoC) initiative in Vredendal in the Western Cape, it’s safe to say that South Africa is well on its way to producing green hydrogen as part of its renewable energy posture. To this end, the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) has embarked on an 18-month research project: a comprehensive study of hydrogen power in SA which will assist us in our efforts to support the hydrogen economy, identifying growth areas for skills and economic development.
The energy requirements of data centres can be significantly reduced with suitable cooling technology. The world’s hunger for data is making itself felt everywhere and is increasing inexorably: whether this be in smartphones, production facilities or traffic monitoring. These data sets are processed, stored and forwarded by data centres.
Chillventa, the leading international fair for refrigeration technology and the most important gathering of international refrigeration, AC, ventilation and heat pump experts will celebrate its comeback in Nuremberg from 11 – 13 October 2022. Already, all participants are anticipating this massive reunion at the first on-site edition of the event since 2018. The community’s commitment to what is the highlight of its calendar remains unabated, while the need to finally make business contacts face-to-face again and share trends, solutions and knowledge with one another is greater than ever. South African businesses pledged billions of rands towards localisation at the Proudly South African Buy Local Summit and Expo with the goal of revitalising the economy and creating thousands of new jobs. Localisation remains at the heart of government’s economic recovery strategy, as the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) and National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) parties aim over the next five years to reduce South Africa’s reliance on imported non-oil products and replace them with local goods and services.

Climate change and decarbonization objectives are driving governments and investors to consider clean energy investing. But do investments in clean energy make financial sense? This is the question that a series of joint publications by the International Energy Agency and Imperial College London have sought to answer. Our aim is to establish greater financial transparency and provide more data to help financial institutions and policymakers participate in the energy transition.
GIZ has handed over a reviewed refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) curriculum that now includes green cooling technologies. A future-friendly transformation of the RAC sector requires well-trained technicians who know how to handle such green cooling technologies. The concept of green cooling describes the use of natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons (e.g., propane and isobutane), ammonia and CO2 in combination with highly energy-efficient appliances, ideally powered by renewable energy sources.
