By Ilana Koegelenberg

Mark Hendricks joined the local Seeley International team as applications engineer last August, bridging the gap between pure engineering and the commercial aspects of the industry.

In this role, Hendricks focuses on the client’s specific applications and ensures that their individual needs are met. This means understanding the technology (and its limitations) and designing a system that offers not only the best cooling solution for the end user, but also the best energy savings.

Getting started

After school, Hendricks went on to study mechanical engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This was a field he had always seen as a “good fit”, as technical problem-solving was always of great interest to him.

At 17, Hendricks had job shadowed at WSP in Cape Town. So, when the time came to do his in-service training, he immediately approached them, and they agreed to take him on for a year. Upon completing his training, he stayed on for another two years, quickly progressing in the projects division — he was 24.

Hendricks then left WSP and the engineering sector with the intention of expanding his commercial abilities. “The ability to effectively link the technical and commercial needs of markets and clients can be very impactful.”

It was during this time that Hendricks’s path crossed with that of Seeley International. When an opening to join their applications division arose, after much research, he decided to go for it. “I saw a great opportunity to be part of a team whose interests lie deeply rooted in innovation and positive results.”

For the love of the job

Hendricks enjoys what he does, particularly the diversity of the role and the educational aspects — bringing new technology into the market and empowering its uptake.

He is passionate about both the HVAC and sustainability aspects of the role. With HVAC being such a large energy consumer in buildings, the potential for reducing the impact on the environment (and the client’s energy bill) was a huge pull for him.

“What drives me in life is how much positive change I can bring to those around me.” This has been crucial to his success; a list that also includes asking a lot of questions, recognising the value of good mentorship, and understanding your role. “When we appreciate that the needs of the environment, the project, and the client outweigh the needs of the individual, you can achieve a lot more.”

Future plans

There is still a great deal that Hendricks wants to accomplish in his career. “The idea of introducing fresh solutions to African projects excites me. We live in a place that has unbelievable potential for implementing sustainable solutions and I endeavour to keep that in the forefront of my mind as I strive to be a renowned industry expert.”

But this is merely the beginning for Hendricks. His personal ambition is to ultimately play a tangible role in the upliftment of both the industry and job creation in general.
