Craig Blankers: when passion and potential meet

By Ilana Koegelenberg

Craig Blankers landed up at WSP while fulfilling his practical training requirement during his studies and hasn’t looked back since, quickly advancing not only his education but also his HVAC career.

Blankers is currently employed as a mechanical technologist in the HVAC department of the Building Services division of WSP. His responsibilities on projects range all the way from inception to project close out, including bidding and budgeting, HVAC design, cost control, system commissioning, quality control, and project handover to client.

Getting started

Blankers started working at WSP during the practical training requirement of his diploma, when he was fortunate enough to be offered a permanent position to join their HVAC team. He decided to complete the remainder of his studies part time, “and the rest is all history,” he explains.

He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BTech) in mechanical engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology and is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in engineering and technology management through the University of Pretoria.

So why this industry? “Whilst studying towards my degree, I thoroughly enjoyed thermodynamics as well as mass and heat transfer. With the potential that the HVAC industry holds and my passion thereof, I haven’t looked back since.”

For the love of the job

Blankers enjoys working as an HVAC design consultant. “With every project there are new challenges, as well as opportunities to be creative and innovative.

“Client retention and satisfaction are the two biggest elements of motivation for me.”

“Client retention and satisfaction are the two biggest elements of motivation for me. One of the greatest parts of my job is seeing a design on paper coming to life, within the required time and budget and with little to no operating complications,” Blankers says.

Project things

Over the years, Blankers has worked on multiple shopping centres, medical warehouses, office blocks, residential blocks, and hospitals. But the biggest project he has been involved with in terms of HVAC scope of works, is the Steyn City city centre (combination of residential and retail).

Future plans

Once he has completed his honours degree, Blankers would like to go further and tackle his Masters in both business and financial management. “With the work experience I have gained in designing engineering systems, client interaction, and cost control, my ultimate goal would be to manage a consulting company from the business operation directorship.”
