Cyril Macquet-Maurel: a growing passion for knowledge

By Ilana Koegelenberg

“With the vast areas in our industry, I am continuously learning, reading, and growing, with the goal of becoming the best I can be,” says Cyril Macquet-Maurel, managing member of Shosholoza Airconditioning and Refrigeration.

Macquet-Maurel has been managing Shosholoza Airconditioning and Refrigeration, a KwaZulu-Natal-based contracting business started by his father, since 2005. Here his responsibilities include everything from managing staff to client relationships and tenders.

He is also the KwaZulu-Natal chairperson of the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (SAIRAC).

At 16, Macquet-Maurel often used to visit his dad at work, even tagging along to late-night breakdown call-outs at local hospitals. He matriculated in 1997 and got straight to work in 1998 as an apprentice. “My dad was stricter with me than everyone else, but his attitude towards clients and problem-solving, his ability to communicate with anyone at every level (which gained his respect and trust in the industry), was what I wanted for myself.”

During his ‘debut’, Macquet-Maurel swept the workshop, cleaned compressor spares, and assisted with compressor rebuilds. However, he spent his lunch breaks reading air-conditioning notes. “I wanted to be the best I could be, learning everything I could from everyone I worked with.”

In 2001, at 21, he qualified as an HVAC&R technician, continuing his quest for knowledge through self-study. He put himself through his electrical trade and qualified as an electrician by 2005. This is also when his ambition and drive facilitated the transition from senior technician to taking on more responsibility, which eventually led him to taking over the business. Since then, he has completed his studies to N6 level (as well as various other courses), and his passion has just grown.

“I am always striving to do things differently and I want to see my staff grow. I love what I do, and I love the look on my technicians’ faces when the light goes on when they try and solve a particular problem. Having the opportunity to work with great people at my company is exciting, challenging, and rewarding. My vision is to create an environment for staff to apply their minds, feel free to learn, and enjoy what they do.”

Macquet-Maurel has been involved in many projects across the board, but two stand out. One is a water-cooled chilled water project complete with building management system and variable air volume. The other was the design and implementation of a greenhouse for a sugar cane cross-breeding plant that encompassed a high-pressure humidifier system, ventilation, and digital control.

He has also commissioned systems outside of the country in Swaziland, Mauritius, and Nigeria, working on smaller projects in New Guinea and Rwanda, too.

Macquet-Maurel sees himself playing a role in educating the youth. “I am passionate about training and providing the new and upcoming technicians with the tools to approach their jobs correctly. I want to teach them that anything is possible if you apply yourself.”

He would also like to complete his mechanical engineering studies and register as a professional engineering technician.

“I want to be a trusted and respected individual in the industry, who will keep my focus on providing solutions to the challenges we face daily.”
