Cox ups its game

Cox Manufacturing recently opened an East London branch, while they also recently purchased a new automatic rectangular duct line for the KwaZulu-Natal operation to improve the company’s output and quality.

East London operation

One of KZN’s primary duct manufacturers, Cox Manufacturing also set up a new factory in East London in December 2018 to provide about 25 000m2 of rectangular and spiral ductwork for their client that was awarded the prestigious Mercedes Benz Paint Plant project.

This is a benefit for East London with the factory housing both an automatic rectangular duct line and spiral duct machine. Over and above standard ductwork, the factory will also supply kitchen canopies, industrial ventilation systems, dust extract systems, cyclones, sound attenuators and general welded products to name a few. This base will also allow the factory to supply nearby areas including Mthatha, the Transkei, Port Elizabeth, Wild Coast and the garden route.

Having worked at Defy and Whirlpool for nearly 10 years, Gary Mathews was appointed the East London operations manager who ensures that the ducts are delivered on time and at the highest possible standard. Mathews is supported by his team of more than 20 staff that includes a qualified sheet metal worker. “Gary has a wealth of knowledge and qualifications on lean manufacturing which is well welcomed to our industry,” says Mike Cox of Cox Manufacturing.

New duct line machine

Cox acquired a new 100% British-made automated duct line for its KwaZulu-Natal operation. With the British manufacturer boasting a proven track record of almost 40 years, Cox can now expand its line with advanced features such as an automatic insulator, flanging transfer line and automated duct sealer, to name a few.

“What this machine means is faster lead times, lower labour costs and higher precision quality fabrication,” explains Cox. This machine can produce a duct every 60 seconds!

The machine manufactures small ducts, fully automated up to 750mm wide with drive- and semi-automatic for ducts larger than 750mm – only requiring one operator.

The auto line is capable of using 1 500mm wide coils instead of the traditional 1 200mm ones which means using 20% less duct joints, which in turn results in lower installation costs and lower duct air leakages. The 1 500mm fabrication will soon be available for clients.

Industrial-grade manufacturing

Cox Manufacturing has been improving its technical skills in heavy duty manufacture. In 2017, the company underwent successful radiographic welding tests with certification in both stainless steel and aluminium welding disciplines. The company now has the ability to weld in mig, tig and high frequency equipment in work in exotic materials such as aluminium.

Heading this department is qualified boiler-maker foreman Robert Shedrick who has over 30 years’ of experience in heavy industry fabrication. “This has allowed the company to increase its work in heavy industry with duct pressures in excess of 2 000pa and not only supply industrial grade ductwork, but also fabricate steel structures and platforms for both the commercial and industrial HVAC industry,” explains Cox.

Added to this product portfolio, the company has the ability to fabricated dust extract cyclones, access platforms, chilled water piping and other welded products.
